Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)
‘Sustainable Aviation Fuels‘ (‘SAF’) are defined in the as aviation fuels that are either synthetic aviation fuels, aviation biofuels or recycled carbon aviation fuels. SAF produces similar levels of carbon dioxide to conventional aviation fuels when burned, but the carbon dioxide generated is already part of the carbon cycle and is not extracted from the ground specifically for creating aviation fuel. This means that using SAF results in a reduction in carbon emissions compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces over the lifecycle of the fuel. A major challenge is that SAF availability remains low globally, and today accounts for nearly 2.7% of our total fuel.

What is SAF?
As SAF is similar in chemistry to traditional fossil jet fuel, it can be dropped straight into existing fuel supply infrastructure and aircraft without modification. As a result, it’s the readiest solution to reduce the carbon emissions associated with aviation. Emission reductions from the use of SAF are measured as the reduction of carbon emissions on a greenhouse gas lifecycle basis, typically by 80% or more compared with the fossil jet fuels it replaces. Alongside our parent company IAG, who has so far committed $3.5 billion to SAF investments and purchases, we see progressing the development and commercial deployment of SAF as crucial to reducing the carbon emissions associated with aviation. It is a key part of our plans to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and we will be fuelling our aircraft with at least 10% SAF by 2030, in line with the UK government’s SAF mandate. This includes investing in SAF plants in the UK and US to scale up the availability of SAF. We currently use or plan to use SAF produced from used cooking oil, woody biomass, used tyres, or orchard and forestry waste. We were the first airline in the world to use SAF produced on a commercial scale in the UK after signing a multi-year agreement with Phillips 66. And in 2024, IAG made its largest SAF purchase agreement to date with producer for the supply of e-SAF, an advanced form of power-to-liquid SAF made from carbon dioxide, water and renewable energy.
Will the SAF I purchase be used on a specific flight?
Similar to green electricity tariffs, there isn't a special SAF infrastructure that sends SAF to particular flights. Instead, the SAF will be procured and 'dropped-in' i.e. mixed into the existing fuel infrastructure. This is because the SAF is blended with conventional jet fuel before it reaches an aircraft. To maximise efficiency, SAF is put into the fuel infrastructure system at strategic locations such as London Heathrow. Delivering SAF manually to different locations would increase the lifecycle emissions of that SAF, due to the emissions associated with transporting the fuel. Nevertheless, this purchase-based approach to the attribution of SAF means that the SAF you buy can be attributed to you. British Airways will ensure that the SAF is sourced and consumed no later than 12 months after a customer has made a SAF purchase.
How much SAF does British Airways use today?
In 2024 SAF accounted for nearly 2.7% of British Airways’ total fuel. In 2024, we used 130,000 tonnes of SAF, mitigating approximately 350,000 tCO2e, in lifecycle emissions that would have been burnt by fossil-based jet fuel. Whilst small, this is a 250% increase from 2023 (from 1.1% and 50,000 tonnes of SAF). And we’re already investing in a wide range of innovative technologies to help scale up SAF production and using SAF is an everyday reality in our operation.
Why isn't there more SAF available?
A major challenge is that SAF availability remains low globally, and today, SAF accounts for nearly 2.7% of British Airways' total fuel. The limited supply available today is one of the reasons the price is high. The production of SAF, and the development of the technology that makes it, is in its early stages, so creating enough SAF to supply what is required for the aviation industry to replace traditional fossil jet fuel will take time and investment.
What's behind the calculations?
Will a record be kept of my SAF purchases?
When contributing to SAF through the , you will receive an email receipt to confirm your contribution and be able to track all transactions via your British Airways Club account statement.
Can I pay in currencies other than GBP?
All payments will be collected in pounds (GBP). The amount of Avios and tier points awarded will be based on the GBP contributed. If paying in another currency, you may be subject to currency exchange fees from your card provider.
How will I know where my contribution has gone?
When you contribute to SAF today, you are doing so by purchasing the attributes associated with a given amount of unblended, physical SAF which British Airways has flown or will fly on in the next 12 months. The sale of these attributes provides you, a buyer, with a claim to the carbon reduction benefit associated with the purchased amount of SAF. Your contribution to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (‘SAF’) supports the purchase of quantities of SAF, which count towards our voluntary SAF commitments and enables SAF usage beyond the UK government’s SAF mandate.
What will be shown on my credit card statement following my purchase?
Purchases will be managed by the company Chooose on behalf of British Airways. Purchases on your credit card statement will show “Chooose* BA” as the merchant.
What will be shown on my British Airways Club statement when I make my contribution?
The Avios and tier points awarded in relation to your contribution will appear on your British Airways Club statement within 72 hours as ‘BA Better World – SAF Contribution’. If you have chosen to redeem Avios towards your contribution, this will appear as a separate transaction under ‘BA SAF redemption’.
